A round-up of some of the latest local and international small domestic appliances category news.

EU’s new energy saving rules

New plans announced by the EU recently will see any high usage small domestic appliances come under stricter regulations in future.

Kettles have been singled out for their high power usage but so far toasters have avoided coming under fire as their overall power yields are comparatively low.

Will it sous vide – really?

Fans of the Will It Blend viral marketing campaign created by Blendtec should enjoy the new Will It Sous Vide? column on the excellent Lifehacker website.

The column asks for readers’ input and suggestions as to what could or should be placed in the sous vide machine (aka immersion cooker) with healthy encouragement “to branch out and find some weirder, less obvious applications” than the classic ribeye steak.

Experiments tried out so far include a whole thanksgiving turkey, raw cookie dough, pumpkin pie, and macaroni cheese. The results are often mixed, sometimes great and always interesting.

An interesting and often amusing online experiment, particularly for those just cottoning on to the benefits of immersion cookers.
