Smartwatch market takes a dive – or does it?
The smartwatch market is in a funny place.
Having sold through its Moto 360 devices, Motorola (now Lenovo Moto) has said it will step back from smartwatches indefinitely.
Faced with no Android Wear update this year, the other members of the Android Wear posse, LG and Huawei, have no new products either right now.
Samsung meanwhile ploughs its own furrow with the new Tizen powered Gear S3 models which have a foot in both the smartwatch and fitness wearable camps.
On the other side of the fence, the performance of the second Apple Watch has yet to be reported on while sales of the original model have slowed and is being quietly discounted.
What’s the basis in fact of all this? Well, the normally solid reports on smartwatch shipments have been conflicting.
IDC for example saw a dramatic decline in shipments for Q3 2016. But Canalys subsequently recorded 60% growth in Q3 shipments…
Be that as it may, Apple Watch’s integration of fitness and GPS into the new model (not to mention the special Nike version) will set it at odds with Fitbit and to a lesser extent Garmin in wearables, both of whom have the general and specialised fitness markets pretty much at their feet right now.
The ongoing reports of the acquisition of smartwatch outsider Pebble by Fitbit are another indicator that the wearables market has changed. Pebble has continued to take an alternative outlook on the subject but it has been struggling lately to make headway with its latest iterative products.

On the other hand, the massive and influential Fossil group is making some inroads with its Misfit brand and its far from “me too” products and is also starting to launch products under its other banners, mainly watches that have smart aspects rather than smartwatches as such.
What does all this mean? Some pundits are saying that general smartwatches lack focus and deliver poor value compared to other wrist-born timepieces.
Others say integrating fitness, as Apple has done, will broaden appeal. Those who require specialist running or other exercise functions will remain orientated towards Garmin.
After all this, wearables is a market that’s both consolidating, taking a mental health day and pushing ahead regardless. Watch this space!
