InSinkErator celebrates its roots and workforce with new website
More than 75 years ago, tinkering with an idea and some sheet metal, an architect in Racine, Wisconsin, John W Hammes, invented the first food waste disposer.
To this day, InSinkErator’s headquarters are still in Racine and, in honour of its American roots (InSinkErator is still the only garbage disposal made in the USA), the firm has created a website to celebrate its workforce and the products they make.
Today, InSinkErator employs over 1,000 people in Racine (see photo above) and has now expanded with a second facility in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Its disposers are still manufactured with 80%+ domestic content.
The website tells the story of InSinkErator’s journey from humble beginnings to the American icon it has become, holding 300 worldwide patents and producing more than 150 million disposers since the company’s inception.
Among the other features on the new website are videos that show a day in the life of four of InSinkErator’s veteran employees. “Our employees take great pride in making products for the rest of the world,” says Tim Ferry, President of InSinkErator.
“Many of our employees are 2nd and 3rd generation InSinkErator employees. Their parents and grandparents had a tremendous work ethic that they passed on to children and grandchildren.”
How much is too much?
UK supermarket Waitrose’s (www.waitrose.com) annual Food & Drink Report release at the end of last year is a fascinating insight into the changing food preferences of the British.
Have we reached peak cookbook? - Well over half of Waitrose’s respondents said they Google recipes more now than 5 years ago and a third said that, despite their kitchens being full of cookbooks, they actually never use them…
Age no barrier to adventure? - Waitrose also found that Brits 55+ were more than twice as likely to be “inventive in the kitchen” as they are to follow a recipe. Contrary to expectation, British 18-24 year-olds were actually less inclined to improvise than use a recipe.

Liebherr SICN3366 Fridge Freezer
Part of the recently revamped 60cm fully integrated refrigeration range, Liebherr has introduced a new model. SICN3366 is a true integrated product with a door -on-door system. Ideal for the replacement market or kitchen renovations where easy access to plumbing may not be practical, the SICN3366’s built-in automatic ice-maker does not require permanent plumbing but instead uses an integrated 1.2L water tank located in the fridge cavity as its water source. Then there are the Liebherr features you would expect: soft close door hinges; perfect white LED lighting throughout; elegant electronic touch-controls for precise control of either fridge or freezer; and No-Frost technology.
