Canalys' latest smartphone numbers for Q2 2018 (see graphic above) say that Huawei has become the world’s #2 smartphone vendor, displacing Apple.
Globally, despite being locked out of the US market, Huawei shipped 54 million handsets, +41% year on year, thanks mainly to the strong sell-in of its flagship P20 unit.
Another big reason for Huawei’s success, says Canalys, is the growing role of its affordable Honor sub-brand, which accounted for two-thirds of Huawei's almost 16 million unit Q2 gain.
Samsung remained top dog in Q2, but felt the impact of Huawei and others, as shipments fell 8%.
Although Apple dropped to third during a period where it is traditionally weak, says Canalys, it still saw a 1% year-on-year gain in units, thanks to increased shipments of iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.
