A new online tool is designed to help consumers pick the most energy-efficient appliances.

EECA Energywise's new Rightware tool gives consumers information about appliance types and the ability to compare the energy efficiency of appliances by brand, usage, and size before they go to a store.

Users can sort by current Energy Rating, or by estimated annual running cost (based on an estimated electricity price of $0.25/kWh).

For the initial launch, six product categories have been included:

  • Single room heat pumps
  • Televisions
  • Fridge/freezers
  • Clothes washers
  • Clothes dryers and
  • Dishwashers

Of the other product types currently included in the Energy Rating labelling, only computer monitors have been omitted from Rightware.

Other appliances, including some commercial products, will be added over the coming months, says EECA.

The product details and efficiency ratings were supplied by New Zealand manufacturers and importers.
