Spotify launches mobile radio feature
26 June 2012: As part of a series of iOS app updates, digital music service Spotify has announced a new mobile radio feature to be rolled out to all territories.
For members of Spotify's premium service, mobile radio is available for iPhone and iPad and will also be added to Spotify's Android app in the coming weeks.
The feature will enable users to:
- Tap into a catalogue of millions of songs - mobile radio has the entire Spotify catalog to choose from.
- Create stations based on any artist, album or playlist.
- Save their favourite songs - users can nominate songs with a 'thumbs up' and they will be saved to a 'Liked from Radio' playlist and made available to listen to whenever they want.
- Personalise their radio feature - every time a song is given a thumbs up (or down), Spotify learns.
As a result of unique US licensing laws, Spotify were able to offer a standalone free version (i.e. no subscription required) of the feature to US music fans. But the aim is to bring a free mobile radio service to Spotify users in all countries over time, subject to licensing.
